Before settling on a career in interiors, Alan McVitty studied all aspects of design including art history, fashion and TV and theatre set design, bringing a wide diversity of interest and experience to his own style. Working initially with Richard Daniel Design and Trevillion Interiors in London specialising in hotels and restaurant interiors, Alan began to express his flair for concepting hotel interiors, designing and selecting fabric and furnishings. In 1993 he joined KCA International, at this time a small energetic team, where he worked on a variety of hotel projects worldwide including Jumeirah Beach (Project Designer) Resort Hotel and the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai. He moved again in 1997 to SMC and away from land based projects to start a love affair with all things nautical, specialising in the interior design of cruise ships & ferries. Alan worked on numerous ships including P&O Aurora, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 and was concept designer for the new build Queen Mary 2. Returning to terra firma, he took the post of Interior Design Manager at Harrods. In addition to running the interior design team who provided the interior styling service for Harrods customers, he also worked with the chairman, Mohammed Al-Fayed, on various projects including show flats for apartments on Park Lane. Alan left Harrods to launch his own company in 2002.
‘It has been my experience that it’s all too easy to get pigeon-holed within your chosen profession and I was determined that this wouldn’t happen to me,’ he says. ‘So I’ve kept my experience varied and the company reflects this in its portfolio of residential and commercial interior design projects. We are now in our nineteenth year in business with residential and commercial projects in London and worldwide.
When designing for other people its important to personalise a space otherwise you say very little about the person or company you are designing for. I look at the clients’ personal tastes and interests and reflect this in the finished project.
Travel is my biggest inspiration and well-executed design. My taste is a new classic fusion with a twist and the interiors I create reflect that.
Comfort and practicality is a priority when I work on any project. One can create less cluttered spaces but I am not a minimalist and I love collecting things that remind me of places or people.’
